Bespoke tailoring in Mayfair is concentrated on one short street, Savile Row, and the lanes around it: Clifford Street, Old Burlington Street, Sackville Street and St George Street. A bespoke suit is cut from a paper pattern drafted for one customer and made over several fittings, which is what separates it from made-to-measure, where a standard pattern is adjusted to your measurements.
The row runs north from Vigo Street, and many of its tailors are known by their number. Gieves & Hawkes is at No. 1, Dege & Skinner at No. 10 and Huntsman at No. 11. Number 13 houses several workrooms on different floors, among them Richard Anderson, Cad & The Dandy, Hidalgo Brothers and Banshee of Savile Row. Bespoke takes the longest, because the pattern is drafted from scratch and the garment is basted, tried on and recut before it is finished. Made-to-measure is quicker and starts from an existing block. For tailoring off the rail, Hackett has a shop on Regent Street, and Moss Bros on Oxford Street also hires formal wear.
