Mayfair’s wine merchants trade in provenance as much as product. Several hold royal warrants, and the cellars beneath W1 contain bottles that have not moved in decades.
The trade covers several distinct services: retail across a working range, fine and rare wine sourced through private cellars and auction, en primeur purchasing of Bordeaux and Burgundy futures, and storage under bond where duty and VAT are deferred until a bottle is withdrawn.
Advice is the real differentiator. A good Mayfair merchant will build a cellar around what a client actually drinks, advise on drinking windows, and buy back or broker bottles that no longer fit. Several run tastings and dinners for customers.
