Just like in real life, video games have their own symbols of wealth and status, and World of Warcraft is certainly no exception. Over the years, the game has accumulated a remarkable collection of items that sit firmly at the top end of the prestige ladder, being the sort of treasures that make others turn heads and instantly recognise a player of means.
But what exactly are people willing to spend millions of gold or even staggering sums of real money on? Let’s take a closer look at some of the most expensive and sought-after items ever introduced in the game and explore what truly defines luxury in World of Warcraft.
Sulfuron Hammer and Sulfuras, Hand of Ragnaros
We’ll start our journey into Azerothian luxury with a pair of WoW Classic items that truly go hand in hand: Sulfuron Hammer and Sulfuras, Hand of Ragnaros.
Sulfuras is a legendary two-handed mace wielded by Ragnaros the Firelord, the elemental lord of fire and one of the main bosses in the Molten Core raid. This weapon is craftable, and in order to create it, players need to combine a special item called Eye of Sulfuras with Sulfuron Hammer, another two-handed mace. Unlike Sulfuras, the hammer is tradable and can occasionally be found on the in-game Auction House for 5,000-7,000 gold (prices can even climb well past 20,000 gold on some servers). To put that into perspective, the economy in classic-era WoW is dramatically tighter than in modern expansions, and earning a few thousand gold could take months of dedicated farming (unless, of course, you opt to buy WoW gold from a boosting platform and have the exact amount you need delivered to your account within a few hours).
The reason why Sulfuron Hammer is so expensive is that the crafting recipe requires a lot of unique components, some of which are quite difficult to obtain. To make matters even more demanding, the hammer can only be forged at the Black Anvil within Blackrock Depths, and the crafter needs to have a high skill of the Blacksmithing profession.
In the end, you get a weapon that is both powerful and incredibly prestigious. In Classic WoW, owning Sulfuras marks you out as either exceptionally wealthy, extraordinarily dedicated, or quite possibly both.

Teebu’s Blazing Longsword
On Classic servers, Teebu’s Blazing Longsword is often regarded as one of the most expensive items in the entire game, with prices commonly ranging from 5,000 to 10,000 gold, and occasionally soaring up to 100,000 gold on certain realms.
From a gameplay perspective, this incredibly looking fiery blade offers excellent damage for melee DPS, yet much of its prestige comes from something less measurable: its history. Teebu’s Longsword appeared on the original World of Warcraft box art and was the very first epic weapon that players had ever seen, which quickly turned it into the most coveted in-game item and a true status symbol. Getting hold of it was never easy, though, and it remains just as difficult today, as the sword has an almost non-existent drop chance from high-level elite enemies.
Big Blizzard Bear
Big Blizzard Bear, often simply called the Polar Bear, was originally awarded to attendees of BlizzCon 2008, the annual fan convention hosted by Blizzard Entertainment. Players who took part in the convention received a redeemable code that granted the mount in-game. Unused codes still exist, but they are quite rare and typically sell for around $800-1,000 (£600-800) on online marketplaces.
So, whoever owns this mount is either a long-time fan who attended BlizzCon in 2008 or someone wealthy enough to spend a hefty sum to get their hands on it. Either way, Polar Bear remains one of the most distinctive prestige mounts in the game.
Swift Spectral Tiger
If there is one mount that perfectly embodies the idea of luxury in WoW, it may well be Swift Spectral Tiger. This mount originates from the WoW Trading Card Game, specifically from the Fires of Outland expansion set. Players had a chance to obtain a redeemable code for the mount inside booster packs, though the odds were extremely slim, roughly one in five hundred packs.
At the time of its debut, the Spectral Tiger was unlike anything players had seen before, donning a stunning translucent, ghost-like design. Over the years, the mount has become one of the most sought-after collectibles in the WoW community. Most players who obtained the code years ago redeemed it immediately, and since the trading card game is no longer produced, the sealed or unused codes are now incredibly difficult to find. When they do surface on resale markets, they typically sell for somewhere in the region of $5,000-7,000 (£4,000-6000).
While there are technically rarer mounts in the game, when it comes to prestige and demand, nothing really compares to Swift Spectral Tiger.
Mighty Caravan Brutosaur
Originally introduced in the Battle for Azeroth expansion, the mount was sold by an in-game vendor for 5 million gold. The price was enormous, but it was justified by the mount’s unique functionality: it could carry a mobile Auction House and vendor, allowing players to access the market almost anywhere in the world.
Later on, Blizzard removed the Brutosaur from regular vendors. Since then, it has only appeared occasionally on the Black Market Auction House, a special auction system that sells extremely rare items from past expansions, and has almost always been sold for the gold cap of 9,999,999 gold.
In 2024, a new variant called Trader’s Gilded Brutosaur was introduced to celebrate WoW’s twentieth anniversary. This version came with a built-in mailbox and auction access and was temporarily available in the in-game shop for $90 (around £70). It returned briefly again in 2025 for the same price.
Despite these new additions, the original Brutosaur remains one of the most coveted mounts in the game. Many players continue to save up gold and monitor the Black Market Auction House in hopes of eventually securing one.
Murky
At first glance, Murky might not seem particularly special. It’s simply a small blue baby murloc and not even something unique, because there are lots of similar pet companions in WoW. Yet Murky is widely considered one of the rarest and most expensive pets in the entire game.
The pet was given via a redeemable code to attendees of BlizzCon 2005, the very first BlizzCon event ever organised by Blizzard. At that time, World of Warcraft was still in its infancy, and the convention itself was far smaller than the massive gaming events we see today. As a result, the number of codes distributed was relatively limited from the very beginning, and now, two decades later, unused codes are extraordinarily rare, selling for $6,000-10,000 (£5,000-8,000) on online markets.
For that reason, Murky has become the ultimate status symbol in the WoW community. Players who own the pet are either genuine game veterans or dedicated collectors ready to spend a small fortune on a video game item. It is, without a doubt, a true luxury item that only a very few can call their own.
